Catfish Month 2021

Catfish Month

Well done is better than well said.

Benjamin Franklin

Did you know that there’s a holiday dedicated to catfish? That’s right, and it’s called Catfish Month. Want to learn more about the creation of this tasty holiday? Read more to learn about its history and see how you can participate in Catfish Month.

History of Catfish Month

The first mention of this holiday was in August of 1984 when President Ronald Reagan announced to the nation that there would be a national holiday dedicated to the catfish. Since his announcement of the holiday, the Catfish Institute (TCI), The Jackson-based location of the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish industry, works throughout the year to promote the work, the farmers it represents and the impact they have on local economy. Catfish is one of America’s largest aquaculture products, and each year, a farmer is awarded “Catfish of the Year” as an exemplary example of what an American farmer looks like.

Catfish Month aims to educate people about the agricultural importance of catfish in the economy. As they have been farmed or fished for food for hundreds of years in Africa, Asia, and South America, catfish is considered a delicacy in some parts of the world as well as a tasty meal in many parts of the United States. Catfish contains low levels of omega-3 fatty acids and a much higher proportion of omega-6 fatty acids, making it nutritious to eat. It’s a stable in many parts of the world, and in the United States, it’s considered a small part of the American tradition.

How to Celebrate Catfish Month

If you’re aching for some catfish, try out this catfish recipe. First, rinse catfish fillets under cold water or put the catfish in an hour-long soak in buttermilk to remove the fish flavor, then wash it off and dry it with paper towels. Then, in a tray, pour milk over the top of the catfish. In another tray, combine 1 cup of cornmeal, 3 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of pepper, and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Remove the fillets from the milk and coat in cornmeal mixture. Let it dry for 5 minutes. Next, in a large skillet, heat the oil and butter up on medium to high heat. Cook the catfish 5 to 7 minutes on each side. Cook until golden brown, drain off excess oil, let it cool for a few minutes, then serve. If you like this recipe, then share this holiday on your favorite social media websites by using the hashtag #catfishmonth.

Celebration Filet Mignon Day August 13, 2021

Filet Mignon Day

There is a cut of meat that is the very definition of luxury and decadence, one that falls from the lips of the common people and the rich debutante royalty of Hollywood in equal measure. Filet Mignon is French for “dainty fillet” and first found its way into the world in the 1906 book ”The Four Million”. Filet Minion Day celebrates the history of this steak and the delicious role it has played in exquisite meals.

History of Filet Mignon Day

Tenderloin. The very word implies a rich and succulent meal that absolutely melts on the tongue, but even in this most perfect cut of meat, there is a portion that is unquestionably the best. This portion is the fabled Filet Mignon. This delicious cut is served in 4 to 8oz portions and comes prepared in one of three varieties, seared in a pan, grilled over coals or the most famous, wrapped in bacon. The bacon is typically added to enrich the piece with fat, as Filet Mignon tends to leanness.

Even though it comes from the tenderloin, there are still multiple cuts of Filet Mignon one can choose to indulge in. The prime cut is the most popular and is available from any form of cattle, the Angus Cut, however, comes specifically from vegetarian fed beef and is far and away one of the best forms of beef available. If you’re truly feeling decadent, you can purchase a 32oz whole Filet Mignon Roast. It may set you back about $65 a pound (That’s $130) but it’ll be worth every succulent bite.

How to Celebrate Filet Mignon Day

If you don’t have a talent with cooking, you can head out to your local steakhouse and enjoy an expertly prepared cut of Filet Mignon. If you’re feeling more adventurous you can head down to your local butcher and get an excellent cut of meat that you can prepare yourself! Marinate it in a wonderful sauce while you get the coals ready, wrap it in bacon, and set it upon the grill to cook. Gently though! Filet Mignon is best-served medium rare so that the soft tender nature of the meat will be preserved. This is just the first step on enjoying Filet Mignon Day, but it doesn’t have to be the last!

Peach Month 2021

Peach Month

I think big business is a terrible thing for the spirit of the country, as our spirit is the best thing about us.

Kurt Vonnegut

Ronald Reagan, when President of the United States of America, proclaimed August “Peach Month” and called upon the people of the United States to incorporate this nutritious fruit into their diets, and call upon interested groups to celebrate this month with appropriate programs and activities. Filed with the Office of the Federal Register, 11:05 a.m., June 16, 1982.

The peach (Prunus persica) is a species of Prunus native to China that bears an edible juicy fruit also called a peach.

It is a deciduous tree growing to 5–10 m tall, belonging to the subfamily Prunoideae of the family Rosaceae. It is classified with the almond in the subgenus Amygdalus within the genus Prunus, distinguished from the other subgenera by the corrugated seed shell.

The leaves are lanceolate, 7–15 cm long and 2–3 cm broad. The flowers are produced in early spring before the leaves; they are solitary or paired, 2.5–3 cm diameter, pink, with five petals. The fruit is a drupe, with a single large seed encased in hard wood (called the “stone” or “pit”), yellow or whitish flesh, a delicate aroma, and a skin that is either velvety (peaches) or smooth (nectarines) in different cultivars. The flesh is very delicate and easily bruised in some cultivars, but is fairly firm in some commercial cultivars, especially when green. The seed is red-brown, oval shaped and 1.5-2 cm long. Peaches, along with cherries, plums, and apricots, are stone fruits (drupes).
